Brown Basilisk

Brown Basilisk

The Brown Basilisk isn't native to Florida and seems to be more visible in Palm Beach County where I got this photo. They're an interesting reptile known as "the Jesus Lizard" due to their ability to run on the surface of water. Their name Basilisk comes from the Greek word meaning "little king" referencing the large crest (crown) on their head. Their rear legs are very strong and combined with flaps between their toes enable them to stay on the surface for 30 - 60 ft feet when when young and decreasing distance as they grow heavier. Once they sink past the surface they continue on by swimming.
