Fern in a Palmetto
The Saw Palmetto is a native plant that tolerates a range of conditions making it ideal for the South Florida semi-tropical climate where it thrives with little to no care. I like it and it's what I see out my back windows where it serves as a barrier planting. It provides a wonderful textural interest beneath trees or as a free-standing plant.
Due to the texture of the palmetto branch, it also provides spots for other plants to grow as in this photo taken in the Everglades. The small ferns have found a home and provide more visual interest to this common plant.
If you're unfortunate enough to run your hand along with the interesting leaf you'll quickly discover where the "saw" in its name came from.
